Introduction of Artist Longze(Dylan) Zhang
Dr. Longze (Dylan) Zhang (张龙泽), PhD, is a distinguished computer scientist and renowned artist, born in Shandong, China. He earned his doctorate from the Chinese Academy of Sciences before moving to the United States in 2009. Now residing in Maryland, Dr. Zhang has dedicated more than 15 years to art education. In 2019, he founded Epie Tech & Art Studio (WeChat: EpieStudioBethesda) in Bethesda, Maryland, attracting students from ages 5 to 70 with his unique teaching approach that blends paper cutting, clay sculpture, and painting. Drawing on years of creative and teaching experience, he has published six books on art education. Known for tailoring lessons to each student’s personality, interests, and age, he is beloved by students and parents alike. “Every student is an independent artist and my friend,” he emphasizes.
Dr. Zhang’s artistry is rooted in traditional Chinese forms—paper cutting, ink painting, and calligraphy—infused with Western painting techniques, digital technology, and craftsmanship. He has actively promoted Chinese art in American communities, serving as Principal of the Chinese School of Rochester, founding cultural music ensembles, and teaching in over 20 schools and libraries. His work has been exhibited at City Hall of Rochester and the Memorial Art Gallery and featured by media such as Many Voices, Many Visions and Democrat and Chronicle.
After relocating to the Washington, D.C. area in 2018, Dr. Zhang gained further recognition through national and international media coverage. His CCTV-featured program Reunion combined paper cutting, clay sculpture, and Chinese cuisine, winning praise in a national competition. In 2022 and 2023, he was invited to the Smithsonian Art Museum, where his work Happy Rabbit was acquired by Director Stephanie Stebich. He designed key visuals for the Washington Chinese Culture Festival and led “Touch of China” events on drawing, clay sculpture and paper cutting.
In late 2023, his commemorative paper cut China–US Friendship was collected by the Chinese Embassy. In early 2024, Dragon and Phoenix Presenting Auspiciousness and Happy Little Dragon Sending Blessings entered the collections of the Chinese Embassy and the Asian Art Museum. Widely covered by CCTV, Shanghai Oriental TV, and other outlets, Dr. Zhang’s innovative integration of tradition and modernity continues to inspire audiences and strengthen cultural ties between China and the West.
